The Excelsior Springs Schools Parents as Teachers program, or PAT, is part of a nationwide effort (implemented in every Missouri school district) to give parents the support and tools they need to be their children’s best and most influential teachers in the crucial first five years. The developmental information that is shared at personal visits and group meetings is Parents as Teachers curriculum that is based on the latest information on brain research and child development information
We provide personal visits for some families, where we will bring child development information based on the age of your child and the latest brain research. We’ll show you age appropriate activities that you can do with your child to help make the most of his first years.
We do yearly developmental screenings to give you the opportunity to see how your child is progressing.
Group meeting/play dates are held every Wednesday morning when school is in session. Meetings are parent/child activities and/or information for adult caregivers. They are usually held at the Early Childhood Center (the building that was formerly the vocational school). A monthly newsletter with a schedule of activities and topical parenting information is sent to participants during the school year.
Why Should I Enroll?
The early years of a child's life are critical for optimal development and provide the foundation for success in school and in life. We believe that you, as the parent, are your child's first and most influential teacher.
Nearly three million children have been served by PAT since it started in 1985. Studies show that PAT children have higher levels of school readiness and continue to outperform their peers in first through fourth grades.
