Excelsior Springs Superintendent Announces Retirement

EXCELSIOR SPRINGS, MO (September 15th, 2020) – After thirty-one years of service in Missouri Public Education, with the past four years as Superintendent, Dr. Dan Hoehn announces his intention to retire at the end of this school year. He informed the Board on September 14th, 2020 during the closed session of the regularly scheduled Board meeting and later made his announcement to staff via email. The email read in part: “When I came to Excelsior Springs I heard from many of you that all we needed was unity, a collective voice, and a focus on making our schools better for our students.”

Dr. Hoehn led the Board of Education through a goal setting process that delivered on five goals; higher student achievement, lower staff turnover, fiscal accountability, long range facility planning, and improved communications with all stakeholders.  The most notable contribution was the passage of a $22 million dollar bond for a new elementary school, various school improvements and safety projects; and leading the District through a pivotal time in public education brought about by substantial changes in school operations due to COVID-19 and the impacts we all felt as a result.. Through it all, Dr. Hoehn kept a “people first” approach. “This family-oriented organizational culture has for many years fostered a rich learning environment for more than 3,000 students,” said Dr Hoehn.

"Dr. Hoehn has accomplished so much in his four years as Superintendent and has always surrounded himself with very talented people," said Tray Harkins, Board President. He added, "his vision to push for modernizing our facilities has been a great accomplishment for our students and our community as a whole. From interacting with all his employees, regularly visiting schools, being relatable and compassionate, he has empowered people towards excellence. Dr. Hoehn will finally have more time to focus on his family, especially his wife Kathy, his daughter, son and grandkids.” On behalf of the Board of Education, we wish him all the best!" The Board of Education will begin the process of hiring the next Superintendent immediately. Dr. Hoehn will continue serving as Superintendent through August 1st of 2021 to ensure a smooth leadership transition takes place.
