New Leadership Roles

ESSD40 welcomes three familiar faces to new leadership roles for the 2022-23 school year. Dr. Brett Coffman has been named the new principal of Excelsior Springs Middle School, Mr. Ben Rubey has been named the new Director of the Excelsior Springs Area Career Center, and Dr. Mark Bullimore has been hired as the Director of Communications for the school district.


Dr. Brett Coffman

Middle School Principal

Dr. Brett Coffman has been named the new Principal of Excelsior Springs Middle School. He is currently an assistant principal at Excelsior Springs High School. He will be replacing Mr. Rubey who has been hired as the new director of the career center.

Dr. Coffman has been in education for 28 years. Throughout that time he has served as a middle school teacher, high school teacher, and assistant principal within the Raytown and Liberty communities. He has also worked for UMKC for three years developing teachers all over the state of Missouri.

In his new position, Dr. Coffman plans to focus on student achievement and increasing opportunities for students to develop leadership skills, soft skills, and plan their path to be successful in high school. He is excited to work with the teachers, students and staff at the middle school and continue to serve the community in Excelsior Springs.

"Middle school is a critical time in a child's development,” Coffman said. "It is so important to create a safe environment, free from bullying and ridicule, so that all students may explore courses with confidence and curiosity."


Mr. Ben Rubey

Career Center Director

Mr. Ben Rubey has been named the new Director of Excelsior Springs Area Career Center. He is currently the principal of Excelsior Springs Middle School.

Mr. Rubey has been with the district for the last 19 years. Throughout that time, he has served as a middle school teacher, basketball and football coach, middle school activities director, middle school assistant principal, and currently as the middle school principal.

In his new position, Mr. Rubey plans to cultivate a culture of collaboration and collegiality, and deliver on a commitment to providing all students a first class 21st century learning experience. He is excited for the opportunity to create and maintain a building atmosphere that encourages and supports the growth of staff, students, and faculty thus leading to an ever expanding and meaningful educational experience for every student.

"My experiences have lead me to an uncompromising view that all students can learn, given a positive learning atmosphere that expects exploration and develops student confidence," Rubey explained. "It is my belief that an educator’s mission is to make school enjoyable, exciting, rigorous and connected to life experience - we can do that here at the Career Center."


Dr. Mark Bullimore

Director of Communications

Dr. Mark Bullimore has been named the new Director of Communications for Excelsior Springs School District. He is currently the director of of the Career Center for the district.

Dr. Bullimore has been with the district for the last 17 years. Throughout that time, he has served as an elementary and high school teacher, head soccer coach, high school assistant principal, middle school principal, and currently as the career center director.

n his new position, Bullimore will help shape the narrative about ESSD40, align communications and community relations to the district’s comprehensive school improvement plan, serve as a liaison for school and community business, and provide pertinent counsel for Superintendent Travis Hux and other district leaders.

“Excelsior Springs is home, and I am thrilled to be joining this team. My goal is to share the districts story with our community, and continue to build the relationships needed with our students, parents, and businesses,” Bullimore said. “I am really looking forward to helping highlight the amazing things happening in our schools.”
